Key insights from this report:
If we consider broadcast television’s “big four,” 2014 was a year dominated by NBC and CBS. The Peacock scored big in the primetime daypart with its Sunday Night Football series, the #1 primetime series of the year across the broadcast landscape. CBS dominated broadcast when it came to average total viewership among persons 2+. Programs like NCIS and The Big Bang Theory finished 2014 as the #1 drama and #1 comedy on TV, while newcomer NCIS: New Orleans finished the year as the most-watched new program on television. Having the original installment as its lead-in didn’t hurt. Not only did CBS finish #1 in total viewership in primetime, but it also defeated ABC and FOX in the core 18-49 demographic. The Big Bang Theory had a lot to do with the positive 18-49 performance, as did newcomer Scorpion. But 2014 is over, and a new year is upon us. With Sunday Night Football on hiatus until the Fall, can NBC maintain its reign over the 18-49 demographic with programs like The Voice and its entertainment originals? ABC is one network to keep an eye on as we embark on the new year. ABC managed to stay afloat with the performance of its entertainment originals. While much of its new comedy slate failed, its dramas did not. Scandal continued its solid performance on Thursday nights, and its lead-out, the Viola Davis-toplined How to Get Away with Murder, ended up being the #1 new program of the fall season in the demos. One new comedy that did not fail ABC was Black-ish, which ended up being the #1 new comedy of 2014 in broadcast, and while experiencing a decline in ratings, Modern Family still dominated Wednesday nights in the demos. Will ABC carry the fall season momentum into 2015? FOX has become a popular punching bag for its poor fall performance. Its new comedies flopped, as did most of its returning programs. The network’s lone bright spot was new drama, Gotham, the comic book-inspired series which thrived in the core demo and scored tons of viewers off of time-shifted data. The network has something to prove. Can ABC and FOX turn the tables on NBC and CBS in 2015? Let’s take a look at the early January performance and see who has started 2015 off with a bang, and who has struggled out of the gate:
Broadcast Network Averages: December 29 2014 – January 13, 2015 (Live+SD)
Here’s how the big four have started 2015. HH, 18-49 and 25-54 will be examined:
Not shown in the above primetime ratings graph are the average P2+ impressions for each network through the first two and a half weeks of the Nielsen calendar year. CBS takes a commanding lead early on, averaging 9.7 million total viewers in primetime during the above interval. Following is NBC (6.6 million), FOX (6.1 million) and ABC in a distant fourth (5.1 million). FOX has taken an early lead in the 18-49 demographic, earning a 1.97 average in Live+SD (2.5 million 18-49 viewers). Following is NBC with a 1.8 average (2.3 million 18-49 viewers), CBS with a 1.7 average (2.1 million 18-49 viewers) and ABC maintains fourth with a 1.3 demo average (1.6 million 18-49 viewers). Looking at what has really become broadcast’s go-to demo, P 25-54, CBS earns the #1 spot, averaging a 2.4 rating in the demo and 2.9 million 25-54 viewers. FOX is second with a 2.33 rating and 2.8 million 25-54 viewers. NBC is third with a 2.26 average and 2.7 million 25-54 viewers. ABC, again, is a distant fourth with a 1.6 average in the demo and around 2 million viewers.
Next, let’s take a deep dive into this past week. The week ending Sunday January 11th (the second week of the Nielsen broadcast calendar) represented the year’s first when all of broadcast’s fall originals returned and a week when the network’s anticipated midseason premieres took flight:
“Last Week in Broadcast” – January 5, 2015 – January 11, 2015 (Live+SD)
Below are the week’s Live+SD average ratings in graphical form:

It’s evident that no broadcast network was happier to see the calendar turn to 2015 than FOX, and arguably the boldest of the broadcast nets got off to a good start in the new year. Per Live+SD averages, FOX led in P 18-49 — its first triumph since the week it aired the final two games of the World Series — with a 2.75 average rating; it was followed by CBS (2.25), NBC (1.86) and ABC (1.36). FOX beat its trio of rivals in the male and female 18-49 sets. FOX edged CBS in P 25-54 (3.24 versus 3.12), and in M 25-54. CBS beat FOX in F 25-54. CBS dominated its competition in average total viewership in the daypart (11.7 million), with FOX finishing second with 8.4 million. NBC and ABC finished a distant 3rd and 4th, respectively.
So which programs, returning and premiering, influenced these primetime network rankings? Let’s take a look:

CBS’ Sunday afternoon NFL playoff game between Indianapolis and Denver leaked into primetime, and its massive average in the daypart gave CBS the #1 primetime telecast of the week. The true #1 primetime telecast of the week was a Saturday night NFC divisional playoff game between Carolina and Seattle, won by the latter. The game, which ironically was the least-watched playoff game of the weekend, earned a 10.4 in the core demo to go with 31 million P2+ viewers. It’s a little-known fact that late-afternoon NFL telecasts tend to score more viewers than NFL telecasts in primetime. As a result, the Carolina/Seattle finish isn’t stunning.
The Golden Globes followed NFL football in the P 18-49 category. The telecast, which earned a 5.8 in the core demo and over 19.3 million P2+ viewers, was a bit down from the 2014 Globes but up from 2013.
The #1 broadcast original of the week in the core demo was CBS’ The Big Bang Theory.
FOX
Day of Week Analysis (Live+SD)
Anchored by its primetime presentation of Carolina vs. Seattle, Saturday night was by far the most successful night of the week for FOX. The network’s Saturday night performance was also tops across TV.
Thursday was the second-highest-rated night of the week (households) with a 5.91, followed by Wednesday (5.58). Wednesday bested Thursday in the demos, and based on what we’re seeing early on, Wednesday could be quite a powerful night going forward.
The strong premiere of Empire, (which only trailed The Big Bang Theory and a NFL-boosted 60 Minutes in the core demo), the return of American Idol on Wednesdays and Thursdays, Gotham and the aforementioned Carolina/Seattle playoff game on Saturday night lifted FOX to a primetime victory in key demos last week. With a 3.8 rating, Empire premiere drew even with ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder as the season’s top-rated premiere in 18-49 and joins Gotham in giving FOX two of television’s top four series launches in the demo this season.
FOX’s big series night was Wednesday, where American Idol returned to lower ratings. Many expected this result, considering the premiere was the 14th in series history. The 3.2 rating in 18-49, 11.2 million P2+ viewers is down approximately 25% from its opening hour last year. Its Thursday premiere drew similar numbers (3.1 in 18-49, 11.2 million viewers overall) and won its two-hour block. While it’s not the juggernaut it once was, Idol on Wednesday helped provide a good lead-in for Empire. Probably the most-heavily marketed and hyped new series of 2015, Empire lived up to expectations in its premiere, and then some. The telecast grabbed a 3.8 in 18-49, and 9.9 million P2+ viewers overall. Empire was the night’s top show in demos. Multiple sources have reported that 67.5% of the Live+SD audience consisted of minorities, 57% of whom were African Americans. Needless to say, garnered this type of audience is rare for a broadcast network, but if the program continues to put up overall ratings similar to these, it could be the start of a significant trend.
Empire increased to a 5.3 in the demo and 13.1 million total viewers in Live+3.
The news wasn’t quite as positive for FOX on Friday, as shown above. Glee returned to kick off its sixth and final season with low numbers (.7 18-49, to go with 2.25 million P2+ viewer average for its two hours). Looks like the program has worn out its welcome among millennials and older.
Gotham got the week off to a nice start (2.5 in 18-49, 7.1 million viewers overall), winning its Monday, 8pm slot with the show’s best Live+SD numbers since its third episode. Not too shabby of a start for a network that languished in last in the fall. We’ll see if the good results continue.
FOX beat its rivals on the following nights: Wednesday (HH, P 18-49, P 25-54), Thursday (P 18-49 only), and Saturday (HH, P 18-49, P 25-54).
CBS
Day of Week Analysis
Anchored by playoff football leaking into primetime, Sunday was the highest-rated night of the week for CBS across the board. Tuesday was #2 in households and 25-54, but Wednesday was #2 in the core demo.
Like FOX, The Eye had a good week. thanks in part to the massive NFL overrun it got on Sunday, which boosted 60 Minutes to a significant performance across the demos and P2+. CBS saw numerous weeknight entertainment series score big numbers in 18-49, namely NCIS, Mom and NCIS: New Orleans. Scorpion scored nice numbers in the demos. These performances pushed CBS to a 2nd-place finish.
CBS dominated last Monday. 2 Broke Girls matched its season high in 18-49 (2.4, 9.1 million viewers overall), Mike & Molly followed with season highs of its own (2.2 in 18-49, 9.6 million viewers overall), and NCIS: Los Angeles earned a season high in the demo. Not hitting a high but racking up its best numbers without an episode of Big Bang Theory leading into it was Monday rookie drama Scorpion (2.4, 12.3 million viewers overall), which was the night’s top show.
Last Tuesday, NCIS (2.8 in 18-49, 19.8 million viewers overall) delivered its top scores since its season premiere and its New Orleans spinoff matched its best 18-49 rating (2.5) while scoring up its largest total-viewer audience to-date (17.7 million).
In addition to Monday, CBS also dominated Thursday in the key demo. Thursday’s The Big Bang Theory was the week’s #1 entertainment series in 18-49 (4.6) and #2 entertainment series in total viewers (18.1 million) with its best numbers since moving to Thursday in late October. Mom followed with series highs (2.7 in 18-49, 12.3 million viewers overall) and Elementary hit season highs (1.5 in 18-49, 8.6 million).
Hawaii Five-0 (1.5 in 18-49) logged its best demo rating since January of last year. It also earned 11.45 million P2+ viewers. Friday night powerhouse Blue Bloods capped the night by matching its season high in 18-49 (1.4) and drawing its largest overall P2+ viewership (12.9 million) since last January.
CBS beat its rivals on the following nights: Tuesday (HH, P 18-49, P 25-54), Thursday (HH, P 25-54), Sunday (HH, P 18-49, P 25-54), Monday (HH, P 25-54), Friday (HH, P 25-54).
NBC
Day of Week Analysis (Live+SD)
It was a nice weekend for NBC, with Sunday finishing as the strongest night for the network. Saturday finished second in households and 18-49. Monday finished second ahead of Saturday in 25-54.
Sunday’s Golden Globes (5.8 in 18-49, 19.3 million viewers overall) was the network’s #1 program of the week. It was down a bit from last year but still outperformed the five years prior to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler started hosting. It is the #1 non-sports broadcast in 18-49 since the Oscars Awards on ABC back in March.
Of note at the Peacock was a good Monday premiere for Celebrity Apprentice (2.0 in 18-49, 6.5 million viewers overall) despite going up against ABC’s debut of The Bachelor debut (2.2 in 18-49, 7.8 million viewers overall). The Dick Wolf-produced trio of Chicago Fire, Law & Order: SVU and Chicago PD finished behind Celebrity Apprentice and ahead of Parenthood.
State of Affairs performed quite poorly in the 18-49 demo, only scoring a 1.0. Faring better despite a much smaller lead-in (A to Z), Thursday’s final season premiere of Parenthood (1.4 in 18-49, 4.6 million viewers overall) matched its highest rating since October of 2013 as the family drama crosses the final finish line later this month. A to Z was the lowest-rated NBC prime program of the week.
NBC did not win a night or a demo last week. Its highest-rated night, Sunday (Golden Globes) was bested by CBS.
ABC
Day of Week Analysis (Live+SD)
On the Alphabet, Monday finished as the most-watched night for the network in terms of households, P 25-54 and 18-49. The second-highest-rated night of the week among households was Friday. #2 among P 25-54 and 18-49 was the comedy-filled Wednesday night.
ABC had a mixed week. Wednesday comedies The Middle hit 11-month highs (2.3 in 18-49, 8.5 million viewers overall) and The Goldbergs (2.5 in 18-49, 7.8 million viewers overall) drew its second-best scores to date — despite the arrival of American Idol in the 8pm hour.
Modern Family was the network’s #1 primetime program of the week, scoring a 3.2 in the core demo, a 5.5 among households and 9.3 million P2+ viewers in total. The Goldbergs finished 2nd in the demos, while Black-ish scored a 2.1 in the core demo, last among the ABC comedies.
The Bachelor performed poorly on Monday night, beat soundly by FOX’s Gotham in the core demo, and finishing 4th overall on the Alphabet for the week with its 2.24 18-49 rating.
ABC won Friday night in the key demo, anchored by Shark Tank (1.95 in 18-49). Last Man Standing (1.6 in 18-49, 8.6 million viewers overall) and Cristela (1.3 in 18-49, 6.6 million viewers overall) had big nights. The 1.6 was the best Live+SD demo score for Last Man since March 2013. With the 1.3, Cristela matched its season high in 18-49.
On the down side, Sunday’s Galavant (1.3 in 18-49, 4.1 million viewers overall) went up against the Golden Globes and experienced a significant drop from its premiere. And that led into a poor .8 demo rating for both Resurrection and Revenge.
20/20 Saturday was the lowest-rated primetime program on the network last week, with the aforementioned Resurrection and Revenge not far behind. Perhaps the Alphabet will see its dramas pick up the slack with the absence of the Golden Globes going forward.
Tuesday’s debut of Marvel’s Agent Carter performed OK. Finishing in the middle of the pack, the telecast placed second in its timeslot (1.9, 6.9 million viewers overall), topping all scores for Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD this season since its premiere.
ABC beat its rivals on these nights in the following demos: Monday (P 18-49), Friday (P 18-49).
