Key insights from this report:
The Academy Awards. The Golden Globe Awards. The Grammy Awards. The Primetime Emmy Awards. The fearsome foursome of awards shows now has some additional company set to hop on the primetime bandwagon: The Daytime Emmy Awards.
It was announced earlier this week that The 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will move to primetime television, airing on Pop, the network formerly known as TV Guide Network. Last year’s ceremony was broadcast online, and the low-budget affair received much criticism. This year, the black-tie event will be broadcast from Warner Bros. Studios. “Our new partnership with the Pop network is an ideal platform to present our signature gala,” Bob Mauro, president of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences said in a statement. “With the Warner Bros. Studios as our venue, where so many great films and television shows have been made, coupled together with Michael Levitt, our executive producer, who created the TV Land Awards and has produced numerous live event specials including The Producers Guild Awards, The Billboard Music Awards, and E! Live from the Red Carpet shows for the Golden Globes and Oscars, this promises to be a very special telecast of the 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards.”
The 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on Sunday, April 26 at 8pm.
While three of the “Big Four” may have already aired their respective 2015 installments (the fourth being The Primetime Emmys), awards show season is far from over. Host Nick Jonas will perform on Nickelodeon’s 28th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards, airing Sunday, March 28 at 8pm. Also taking the stage: Iggy Azalea, Jennifer Hudson and Australian boy band 5 Seconds of Summer. CBS will present the popular American Country Music Awards (ACMs) in April, ABC has The Billboard Music Awards in May, CBS has The Tony Awards in June, and BET airs their popular BET Awards Show in June as well.
Today’s report looks at televised awards ceremony performance in 2015 to-date. How did the best-known ceremonies perform in 2015 compared with previous years? How about some of the lesser-known ceremonies? Are awards ceremony telecasts on the rise or on the decline? How many is too many?
Note: Ceremonies, red carpet shows and parade telecasts will also be included in this measurement.
Top 10 Awards Ceremonies of 2015 TD (Live+SD)
First, we’ll start out with the top 10 in the core demo.
As expected, The Oscars 2015 is the highest-rated awards ceremony of the year to-date, hauling in an 11 rating in the core 18-49 demographic. We’ll take a look at how that performance stacks up against previous years later in the report. Following ABC’s top primetime telecast is CBS’ presentation of The 57th Annual Grammy Awards, which scored an 8.5 in the core demo. The NBC-televised Golden Globe Awards earned a 5.8 on the demo, with the Miss Universe Pageant (2.0) and Univision’s Premio Lo Nuestro 2015 (2.0) rounding out the top 5. Premio Lo Nuestro (Spanish for “Our Thing”) is the Latin Grammys. NBC’s New Year’s Day telecast of the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena also earns a spot in the top 10, as does E! Live From the Red Carpet: Academy Awards. NBC’s NFL Honors ceremony, which is televised at around the time of the Super Bowl, and CBS’ Kennedy Center Honors round out the top 10. The Kennedy Center Honors is an annual honor given to those in the performing arts for their lifetime of contributions to American culture. The Honors have been presented annually since 1978 in Washington, D.C., during gala weekend-long events that culminate in a performance honoring the Honorees at the Kennedy Center Opera House.
Out of the P 18-49 top 10, E!’s Live From The Red Carpet Oscars 2015 telecast skewed the youngest (47.8 years), and the The Kennedy Center Honors drew a median age of 64.3 years.
Let’s look at all of the awards ceremony-themed telecasts that have aired this year to-date:

Not only is The Oscars 2015 the top-rated awards ceremony telecast of the year to-date in the 18-49 demo, but it also takes the cake among viewers 18-34, 25-54 and P2+. It averaged 37.3 million total viewers, ahead of The Grammys (25.3 million) and Golden Globes (19.3 million). The order remains the same when it comes to the big three: Oscars #1, Grammys #2, Golden Globes at #3. But there is movement elsewhere. CBS’ People’s Choice Awards is #4 in total viewership and 25-54, but drops to #5 in P 18-49, behind NBC’s Miss Universe Pageant. Univision’s Latin Grammys moves up to fourth among millennials, grabbing a 1.9 in the demo that’s stronger than the millenniual ratings scored by Miss Universe Pageant (1.8) and CBS’ People’s Choice Awards (1.3). Spanish language broadcast viewers tend to be younger than English language broadcast viewers, and this holds true when it comes to awards shows. The Latin Grammys on Univision hauled in an average viewer age of 36.7 years, while English language broadcaster CBS’ presentation of The Grammys hauled in a 48.3 year old viewer age.
On the other side, Fox Sports 2’s presentation of The World MMA Awards only on February 4th only scored 14,000 total viewers. No love for the Ultimate Fighters?
Many of the major televised awards ceremonies tend to skew female. Has this been the case in 2015 to-date as well?

The BBWAA Awards (Baseball Writers Association of America) averaged the strongest male skew. Almost 83% of its total audience was male. The World MMA Awards sported a 64% male total audience. These two ceremonies also happened to be the two-least-watched televised awards ceremonies of the year to-date. The 4th Annual NFL Honors brought in a 52.5% male audience. These were the only three awards ceremony telecasts with a majority-male audience.
On the other side, almost 75% of the Live From The Red Carpet 2015 (Part 2) total audience on E! was female.
Out of the year’s top three, The Grammys averaged the most even gender comp, with 39.5% of its audience being male. 38.1% of total Oscars audience was male, and 36.5% of the total Golden Globes audience was male.
How do the average ratings of 2015’s most-watched and highest-rated awards ceremonies stack up against the previous year’s installments?
Top Award Ceremony Performance: 2014 vs. 2015
First, we’ll start with the top-10 most-watched in terms of total average viewership:
The three most-watched awards ceremonies of the year to-date, The Oscars, The Grammys and The Golden Globes, are all down in average total viewership. The Oscars averaged 43.6 million total viewers in 2014. The 2015 edition averaged 37.3 million. The Grammys averaged 28.5 million in 2014. The telecast averaged 25.3 million in 2014. The Golden Globes averaged 20.9 million in 2014, but 19.3 million in 2015.
ABC’s telecast of The Rose Parade earned 6.7 million viewers this year, but 7.6 million in 2014. The People’s Choice Awards (CBS), Premio Lo Nuestro (Univision) and NBC’s presentation of The Tournament of Roses were also down from their 2014 editions.
Three of the 10-most-watched awards ceremonies of 2015 to-date are up from their 2014 average. The 4th Annual NFL Honors on NBC averaged 4.7 million viewers. The previous year’s telecast on FOX brought out 3.2 million viewers. The Kennedy Center Honors, which aired on December 30, 2014, scored 9.3 million viewers, whereas the previous edition earned 7.2 million. The Miss Universe Pageant on NBC was WAY up this year after being expanded from 2 hours to 3, and moving from a Saturday night to a Sunday night. The January 25th, 2014 telecast hauled in 7.7 million total viewers, whereas the previous edition, which aired in November of 2013, only brought in 3.8 million total viewers. The 7.7 million total was the largest audience since 2006.
How about on a year-to-year basis? Let’s check out the top-10 most-watched awards ceremonies of this year to-date, and compare their total viewership averages from the past five years. Hover over a bar to see the average rating and/or click on a specific program to hide it from the graph:
The Oscars has been the most-watched awards ceremony of the year four of the past five years, with the exception being The Grammys 2012, which drew a massive 40 million viewer total.
After a rise in total viewership from 2010 through 2014, The 2015 Oscars was the least-watched edition in over 5 years.
This year’s Grammys endured a similar issue: The 2013 Grammys was down from the massive 2012 edition. The 2014 telecast was up from 2013, but the 2015 edition was the least-watched in over 5 years.
The 2015 Golden Globes was down from 2013 and 2014, but still up from 2011 and 2012.
After a viewership decline in recent years, the 37th edition of The Kennedy Center Honors (12/30/2014) trumped the previous three, including a 33% rise from the previous year’s edition.
The 2014 edition of The People’s Choice Awards was the most-watched in over four years, but this year’s edition was the least-watched in over five years.
As previously mentioned, the most-recent Miss Universe telecast (1/25/2015) was the most-watched since 2006.
NBC’s Tournament of Roses Parade telecast on New Year’s Day was down from 2014 but up from the previous three installments. ABC’s coverage of the event was down from 2013 and way down from its NBC competition.
With a 4.7 million total viewer average, The 4th Annual NFL Honors ceremony (2015) was the most-watched in the brief history of the event.
After peaking in 2013, Univision’s telecast of Premio Lo Nuestro has declined each of the past two years (P2+), and the 2015 total of 4.55 million represents the lowest in over 5 years.
Next, let’s compare 18-49 ratings for the year’s most popular awards ceremony telecasts, first comparing 2015 with 2014. After, we’ll perform a year-over-year comparison.
Looking at the P 18-49 demo, four of the 10 highest-rated awards ceremonies of the year to-date are up from their previous edition: Kennedy Center Honors (1.2 in 2015 vs. .9 in 2014); Miss Universe Pageant (2.0 in 2015 vs .9 in 2013); NFL Honors (1.2 in 2015 vs. .9 in 2014); and Premio Lo Nuestro (2.0 in 2015 versus 1.9 in 2014). Each of the major ceremonies that have aired this year (excluding Primetime Emmys) were down from their 2014 ceremony.
Lastly, we’ll perform a year-over-year comparison. Hover over a bar to see the average rating and/or click on a specific program to hide it from the graph:
Similar to P2+ over time, The Oscars was the highest-rated awards ceremony of the year (P 18-49) four of the past five years, with the exception of 2012 and The Grammys (14.1).
While down from the 2013 and 2014 editions, The 2015 Golden Globes is up from 2011 and 2012 in the core 18-49 demographic.
After a sterling 2012, 18-49 viewership for The Grammys has declined each year since and the 2015 edition was the lowest-rated in over 5 years.
The 11.0 P 18-49 rating hauled in by this year’s Oscars was the lowest in over 5 years, with the highest during that span being last year’s edition (13.1 rating). Even E!’s Live From The Red Carpet: Academy Awards coverage, which replaces ABC’s coverage of The Rose Parade in the top-10 awards ceremonies in 18-49, was comparatively poor this year, with the 1.2 Live+SD rating in the demo the lowest in over 5 years.
The 37th edition of the annual Kennedy Center Honors earned a 1.2 in the demo for CBS, up from the previous year’s edition (.9 – a telecast low).
The 2.0 hauled in by The 63rd Annual Miss Universe Pageant (1/25/2015) was the highest rating in the demo since 2009. NBC also struck gold with this year’s NFL Honors ceremony. The 1.2 in the demo is the highest in the brief history of the event.
The 1.8 18-49 Live+SD rating hauled in by the 2015 People’s Choice Awards on CBS was by far the lowest for the event in over five years. The 2014 edition had previously hauled in a ceremony-low 2.4 rating in the demo.
This year’s installment of Premio Lo Nuestro scored a 2 in the demo on Univision, a rating which is up one-tenth from the previous year, but down from the 2011-2013 ceremonies.
Lastly, NBC’s coverage of The Tournament of Roses Parade scored a 1.34 in the demo, slightly down from the 2014 and 2013 editions, but up from 2011 and 2012.
This year’s NFL Honors was the highest-rated in ceremony history and the Miss Universe Pageant scored its highest ratings since 2009. The majority of the top award shows are down from previous years. It will be interesting to see if a decline in viewership continues going forward, particularly the struggles felt by the “major” ones. This isn’t purely a P 18-49 decline, but also a P2+ decline. It will be interesting to see how networks and producers will adapt.
